Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crust: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, combine flour, cold butter, sugar, and salt. Mix until crumbly. Press the mixture into a greased baking dish and bake for 20 minutes until lightly golden.
  2. Make the Custard Filling: In a saucepan, heat milk until steaming. In a bowl, whisk sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook until thickened. Stir in vanilla.
  3. Assemble the Squares: Pour the custard over the baked crust. Smooth the top and refrigerate until set, about 2 hours.
  4. Finish and Serve: Dust the chilled custard squares with powdered sugar. Cut into squares and serve chilled.
