Cake Base:

  • 1 package (15.25 ounces) German chocolate cake mix
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup evaporated milk

Topping:

  • 1 package (11 ounces) caramels, unwrapped
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Mix Cake Base: In a large bowl, combine cake mix, melted butter, and 1/4 cup evaporated milk. Form a thick dough.
  3. Bake Base: Press half of dough into dish, bake for 10 minutes, then set aside.
  4. Prepare Caramel: Melt caramels with 2 tbsp evaporated milk in a saucepan until smooth.
  5. Layer: Pour caramel over base, then sprinkle chocolate chips and pecans. Drop spoonfuls of remaining dough over top.
  6. Bake: Bake for 20–25 minutes until set. Cool before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • For extra richness, use dark chocolate chips or drizzle with more caramel after cooling.
  • These bars taste even better the next day.
