These Sweet Potato Sesame Balls are a delightful Asian dessert that combines the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes with the crunch of sesame seeds. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, these fried balls make for a unique and tasty treat.

Ingredients

Sweet Potato Sesame Balls:

1 cup mashed sweet potato (orange-fleshed), 3/4 cup glutinous rice flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, 1 tablespoon water (as needed), 1/2 cup white sesame seeds, vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potato, glutinous rice flour, sugar, and cornstarch. Mix until a soft, pliable dough forms. If the mixture feels too dry or crumbly, add a small amount of water, one teaspoon at a time, until smooth.
  2. Shape the Balls: Divide the dough into small portions and roll each into a ball about 1 inch in diameter.
  3. Coat with Sesame Seeds: Fill a small bowl with water and another with sesame seeds. Lightly dampen each ball with water, then roll it in the sesame seeds to coat evenly.
  4. Fry the Balls: Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium heat until it reaches 325°F (160°C). Carefully fry the sesame balls in batches, turning often, until they are golden brown and puffed, about 4–6 minutes.
  5. Serve: Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • You can use purple sweet potatoes for a fun twist in color and a slightly different flavor.
  • Be sure not to overcrowd the pan while frying, as this can lower the oil temperature.
