Description

These Swedish meatballs are savory, tender, and full of flavor. Perfectly seasoned meatballs are smothered in a rich, creamy gravy that pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or lingonberry sauce. A classic comfort food that will leave everyone at the table satisfied.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons butter

For the gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the meatballs: In a bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, onion, garlic, nutmeg, allspice, salt, pepper, and egg. Mix until well combined. Shape the mixture into meatballs.
  2. Cook the meatballs: In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 10-12 minutes. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the gravy: In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream. Cook, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Serve: Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the gravy for a few minutes. Serve the Swedish meatballs hot with mashed potatoes or lingonberry sauce.

Notes

  • For added flavor, you can also incorporate a dash of Worcestershire sauce into the meat mixture.
  • If the gravy is too thick, you can thin it out with a little extra beef broth.
  • Leftover meatballs and gravy can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
