Description

This sushi bake casserole is a delicious and comforting twist on traditional sushi, featuring layers of seasoned sushi rice, creamy crab mixture, and crispy panko topping baked to golden perfection. Perfect for sharing with family or friends, this easy-to-make dish combines the flavors of imitation crab, cream cheese, sriracha, and nori to satisfy your sushi cravings in casserole form.

Ingredients

Scale

Sushi Rice

  • 2 cups sushi rice (uncooked)

Crab Mixture

  • 8 oz imitation crab meat (shredded)
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup green onions (chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons sriracha (plus extra for drizzling)

Assembly & Garnish

  • 4 sheets nori (cut into strips)
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Soy sauce (for serving, optional)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare it for baking the sushi casserole.
  2. Cook the sushi rice: Rinse 2 cups of sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch, then cook it according to the package instructions until fluffy and fully cooked.
  3. Prepare the crab mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, shredded imitation crab meat, chopped green onions, and 2 tablespoons of sriracha. Mix everything together until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  4. Assemble the casserole layers: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spread half of the cooked sushi rice evenly across the bottom. Layer half of the nori strips over the rice, then spoon half of the crab mixture on top of the nori. Repeat these layers with the remaining sushi rice, nori strips, and crab mixture.
  5. Add toppings and bake: Sprinkle 1 cup of panko breadcrumbs evenly over the top layer of crab mixture, then drizzle extra sriracha over the breadcrumbs as desired. Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  6. Finish and serve: Remove from the oven and let the sushi bake cool for a few minutes. Garnish with sesame seeds if desired. Serve warm with soy sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • You can adjust the spiciness by adding more or less sriracha to the crab mixture and for drizzling.
  • Use real crab meat if preferred, but imitation crab works well for this recipe and is more budget-friendly.
  • Make sure to rinse the sushi rice thoroughly to achieve the right texture and avoid mushiness.
  • Sushi bake can be served with additional toppings like avocado slices or cucumber for extra freshness.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated in the oven to maintain crispiness.
