Ingredients

Units Scale

Steak:

  • 1 1/2 lbs (680g) sirloin or flank steak, cut into 4 portions

Other Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, sliced
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup dry white wine (optional)
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil or parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Season the steak: Season steak portions with salt and pepper.
  2. Sear the steak: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the steak on both sides, about 2 minutes per side, then remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the onion and garlic: Reduce heat to medium and add the sliced onion and garlic to the same pan. Cook until softened, about 4–5 minutes.
  4. Prepare the sauce: Pour in the crushed tomatoes and white wine (if using). Stir in oregano and red pepper flakes. Simmer for 10 minutes, letting the sauce thicken.
  5. Simmer with steak: Return the steak to the pan, nestling it into the sauce. Cover and simmer on low for 10–15 minutes, or until steak reaches your desired doneness.
  6. Finish and serve: Sprinkle with fresh basil or parsley before serving.

Notes

  • Best served with crusty bread, over pasta, or alongside roasted vegetables.
  • For a richer sauce, add a splash of beef broth or a few olives and capers.
