Ingredients

Units Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional)

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk (plus more for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare the baking sheet: Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar if using.
  3. Cut in the butter: Add the cold, cubed butter and cut it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add buttermilk and shape the dough: Pour in the cold buttermilk and stir until a shaggy dough forms. Pat the dough into a rectangle, fold it over onto itself to create layers, then pat it out again.
  5. Cut out the biscuits: Use a biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits and place them on the baking sheet.
  6. Bake: Brush the tops with buttermilk and bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Serve: Enjoy warm with butter, honey, or jam.

Notes

  • Keep ingredients cold for flaky biscuits.
  • Handle the dough gently to maintain light layers.
  • For extra flavor, brush hot biscuits with melted butter.
