Ingredients

Dough:

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Boiling and Topping:

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 9 cups water
  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water (egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt, for topping

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit until foamy. Add flour, salt, and melted butter. Mix until a smooth dough forms. Let rise for 45–60 minutes.
  2. Shape and Boil: Preheat oven to 425°F. Boil 9 cups of water with baking soda. Divide dough, roll into ropes, cut into pieces. Boil each piece briefly and place on baking sheets.
  3. Bake: Brush with egg wash, sprinkle with salt. Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Serve with cheese dip or mustard.
  • Freeze baked pretzel bites and reheat in the oven.
  • For a sweet version, use cinnamon sugar instead of salt.
