Ingredients
UnitsScale
2 3/4cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1cup unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2cups granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/4cup sour cream
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
2cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
Food coloring (optional, for frosting)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract, almond extract, and sour cream.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden but the centers are still soft. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
For the frosting, in a medium bowl, mix together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
Once the cookies are cool, spread the frosting on top of each cookie. If desired, add food coloring to the frosting and decorate with sprinkles.
Allow the frosting to set before serving or storing the cookies in an airtight container.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can add a teaspoon of lemon zest to the dough.
If you prefer a thicker frosting, add more powdered sugar until you reach your desired consistency.
These cookies freeze well – just store them in an airtight container between layers of wax paper.
Use a cookie cutter to shape the dough into festive holiday shapes before baking for an added touch.
