Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit until foamy. Stir in olive oil and salt. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead and Rise: Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 6–8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  3. Shape and Bake: Punch down the dough, shape into loaves, and let rise again for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F. Make slashes on the loaf tops and bake for 25–30 minutes.
  4. Cool and Serve: Cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For a softer crust, brush the top with melted butter after baking.
  • For a crisper crust, place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
  • This bread freezes well—wrap tightly once cooled.
