  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 23 tablespoons milk
  • Additional sugar for rolling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add egg and vanilla: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, then add milk one tablespoon at a time until the dough is soft but not sticky.
  6. Shape and bake: Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough, roll into balls, coat in sugar, place on baking sheets, flatten slightly, and bake for 8–10 minutes.
  7. Cool and enjoy: Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, try adding 1/2 teaspoon almond extract or citrus zest.
  • Do not overbake—cookies will continue to set as they cool, giving them a soft, chewy center.
