A hearty and comforting slow cooker split pea soup made with green split peas, vegetables, and smoky ham. Perfect for chilly days and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups dried green split peas, rinsed
  • 1 ham bone or 2 cups diced ham
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 6 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse and sort the split peas to remove any debris.
  2. Place the peas, ham bone or diced ham, onion, carrots, celery, and garlic into the slow cooker.
  3. Add the bay leaf, thyme, and chicken broth.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or until peas are soft and soup is thickened.
  5. Remove the bay leaf and ham bone, if used. Shred any remaining ham and return to the soup.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve hot with crusty bread if desired.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, omit the ham and use vegetable broth.
  • The soup thickens as it cools; add water or broth to adjust consistency when reheating.
  • Great for meal prep and freezes well.
