For the steaks:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the steaks: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Cook the steaks: Brown the patties in a skillet for 4–5 minutes per side. Set aside.
  3. Make the gravy: In the same skillet, sauté mushrooms in butter. Add flour, then slowly pour in beef broth. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard. Simmer until thickened.
  4. Finish the dish: Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

  • For extra richness, stir in a splash of cream at the end of cooking.
  • Ground turkey or pork can be substituted for the beef if preferred.
