Ingredients

Units Scale

Potato Gratin:

  • 2 lbs (900g) Yukon gold or russet potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced)
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups grated Gruyère or sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (cut into small pieces)
  • fresh thyme or chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the Cream Mixture: Warm the cream, milk, garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg in a saucepan over medium heat.
  3. Layer Potatoes: Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour over half of the cream mixture and sprinkle with half of the cheese. Repeat with remaining potatoes, cream, and cheese.
  4. Bake: Dot the top with butter, cover with foil, and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20–25 minutes until golden and potatoes are tender.
  5. Rest and Serve: Let the gratin rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with herbs if desired.

Notes

  • For extra richness, consider adding a layer of sautéed onions or cooked bacon between the potato layers.
  • A mandoline slicer can help achieve thin, uniform potato slices.
