Description
This Patty Melt recipe combines juicy, seasoned beef patties with caramelized onions, melted cheese, and a tangy secret sauce, all nestled between toasted rye bread. A comforting and flavorful sandwich perfect for a satisfying meal.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Patty Melts
- 1 lb ground beef
- 4 slices rye bread
- 4 slices cheese (your choice)
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Secret Sauce
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp mustard
Instructions
- Make the secret sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard. Stir until well blended and set aside.
- Prepare the beef patties: Divide the ground beef into two equal portions and form into patties. Season both sides of each patty with salt and pepper.
- Caramelize the onions: Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly until they become soft, golden, and caramelized, about 10-12 minutes. Remove the onions and set aside.
- Cook the beef patties: In the same skillet, cook the patties over medium heat for about 4 minutes per side or until they reach your preferred doneness. Place a slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.
- Toast the bread: Remove the patties and keep warm. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon butter to the skillet and toast the rye bread slices until golden brown on both sides.
- Assemble the patty melts: Spread the secret sauce evenly on one side of each toasted bread slice. Layer a cheesy beef patty on one slice, top with caramelized onions, then cover with the other slice of bread, sauce side down.
- Finish cooking the sandwiches: Place the assembled sandwich back into the skillet and cook over medium heat, pressing slightly, until both sides are golden brown and the cheese inside is melted, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Notes
- You can customize the cheese to your preference; classic choices include Swiss or cheddar.
- For extra flavor, you can add a dash of Worcestershire sauce to the beef patties.
- Keep the heat moderate when toasting to avoid burning the bread before cheese melts.
- This recipe serves 2, but can easily be doubled for more servings.
