Ingredients

Units Scale

Caramel Layer:

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup

French Toast:

  • 1 loaf French bread, sliced into 1-inch thick pieces
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Caramel Layer: In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and corn syrup, cooking until the mixture is smooth and bubbling. Pour this caramel mixture into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading evenly.
  2. French Toast: Arrange the sliced French bread over the caramel in a single layer. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, vanilla extract, and salt. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, pressing down slightly to ensure all pieces are soaked. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  3. In the morning, remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes or until the top is golden and the custard is set.
  4. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Flip slices upside down to serve with the caramel side up.
