4cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 medium potatoes)
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2cups milk
1cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
1/4cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional for topping)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 2-quart baking dish.
In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbly.
Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
Stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder if using. Remove from heat and mix in cheddar cheese until melted.
Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
Repeat with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top if desired.
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and top is golden brown.
Let sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Yukon gold or russet potatoes work best for this recipe.
You can prepare this dish ahead and refrigerate before baking.
