Description

A classic homemade marinara sauce made with simple, fresh ingredients. Perfect for pasta, pizza, or as a dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or basil (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste.
  5. Add sugar, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
  6. Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
  7. Simmer uncovered for 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and flavors develop.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley or basil before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender or regular blender to puree to desired consistency.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • This sauce can be doubled or tripled for batch cooking.
