Description
A classic homemade marinara sauce made with simple, fresh ingredients. Perfect for pasta, pizza, or as a dipping sauce.

- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or basil (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste.
- Add sugar, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
- Simmer uncovered for 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and flavors develop.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
- Garnish with fresh parsley or basil before serving, if desired.
Notes
- For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender or regular blender to puree to desired consistency.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
- This sauce can be doubled or tripled for batch cooking.
