4cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients:
1 3/4cups buttermilk
Instructions
Preheat and Prepare: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and grease a baking sheet or line with parchment paper.
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt. Make a well in the center.
Add Buttermilk: Pour buttermilk into the well. Stir with a spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
Knead and Shape: Turn dough onto a floured surface, knead briefly, shape into a round loaf, and place on the baking sheet.
Bake: Cut an ‘X’ on the loaf, bake for 35–45 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding.
Cool and Serve: Cool on a rack before slicing.
Notes
For a sweeter bread, add sugar. Raisins or currants can be mixed in for a traditional twist.
