Description

This Homemade Peruvian Shrimp Ceviche is a vibrant and refreshing seafood dish that perfectly balances tangy lime and orange juices with fresh vegetables and a subtle kick of jalapeño. It’s a quick and healthy appetizer or light meal, marinated to bring out bold flavors and served chilled with crunchy tortilla chips and creamy avocado.

Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp and Marinade

  • 1 pound Shrimp (fresh raw or cooked frozen shrimp for convenience)
  • 1/2 cup Lime Juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 1/4 cup Orange Juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt (adjust to taste)

Vegetables and Herbs

  • 1 medium Red Onion (diced, can substitute with green onions for milder flavor)
  • 1 cup Cherry Tomatoes (diced)
  • 1 medium Cucumber (diced, jicama can be a substitute)
  • 1 medium Jalapeño (finely chopped, adjust to spice preference)
  • 1/4 cup Cilantro (freshly chopped, can use parsley as alternative)

To Serve

  • 1 medium Avocado (diced, added just before serving to prevent browning)
  • 2 cups Tortilla Chips (gluten-free if desired)

Instructions

  1. Boil the Shrimp: Bring a pot of salted water to a vigorous boil. Carefully add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes until they turn pink and are fully cooked. Drain and allow shrimp to cool completely.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, add the cooled shrimp along with diced cherry tomatoes, cucumber, finely chopped red onion, jalapeño, and cilantro.
  3. Add Citrus Juices: Drizzle the lime juice and orange juice over the shrimp and vegetable mixture to provide acidity and sweetness.
  4. Season and Toss: Sprinkle salt over the mixture and gently toss everything together to ensure even coating.
  5. Marinate: Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 45 minutes to 1 hour to allow flavors to meld and the shrimp to marinate properly.
  6. Serve: Just before serving, garnish the ceviche with freshly diced avocado and serve chilled with crispy tortilla chips on the side.

Notes

  • Use fresh lime and orange juice for the best flavor—bottled juices may alter the taste.
  • Adjust jalapeño quantity depending on your preferred spice level.
  • To keep avocado from browning, add it immediately before serving.
  • Substitute jicama for cucumber for a crisp, slightly sweeter texture.
  • For a milder onion flavor, replace the red onion with green onions.
  • Gluten-free tortilla chips can be used to make this dish gluten-free friendly.
