Units Scale

Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for kneading)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit until frothy. Stir in salt and oil. Gradually add flour and mix until a sticky dough forms.
  2. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding flour as needed.
  3. Rise and Shape: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled. Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a loaf pan.
  4. Final Rise and Bake: Let the dough rise again until puffy. Preheat the oven, then bake the bread until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  5. Cool and Enjoy: Cool the bread in the pan before transferring to a wire rack to slice and serve.

Notes

  • You can substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for added fiber and flavor.
  • Brush the top with melted butter after baking for a softer crust.
