  • 2 cans (28 oz each) whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped

  2. Sauté Onion and Garlic: In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic, sauté until translucent.
  3. Add Tomatoes: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, reserved juice, and basil. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Simmer: Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook uncovered for about an hour, stirring occasionally.
  5. Adjust Seasoning: Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Remove from heat.
  6. Serve: Use the sauce immediately or let it cool before storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • This sauce can be frozen for up to 3 months.
  • For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to puree the cooked tomatoes.
