Description

Gyeran Bap, or Korean Egg Rice, is a simple and comforting dish featuring warm steamed rice topped with a fried egg and enhanced with savory sesame oil, soy sauce, green onions, and toasted sesame seeds. This quick meal is perfect for breakfast or a light meal and offers a harmonious blend of flavors and textures with minimal ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked white rice (preferably short-grain or medium-grain rice)
  • 2 large eggs

Seasonings and Garnishes

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon butter (optional, for added richness)
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 green onion, finely chopped
  • Nori (seaweed) strips, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice: Divide the cooked white rice evenly into two serving bowls and keep them warm while preparing the other ingredients.
  2. Fry the Eggs: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add the sesame oil. Crack the eggs into the skillet and fry them until the whites are fully set and the yolks are cooked according to your preference; traditionally, the eggs are sunny-side up.
  3. Assemble the Dish: Place one fried egg on top of the rice in each bowl.
  4. Add Seasoning: Drizzle soy sauce evenly over the egg and rice in each bowl. For extra richness, add a small pat of butter to each serving if desired.
  5. Garnish: Sprinkle the toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onions on top. Optionally, add nori strips for additional texture and flavor.
  6. Serve: Before eating, mix the egg, soy sauce, and rice thoroughly to combine all flavors and enjoy the comforting taste of Gyeran Bap.

Notes

  • Use short-grain or medium-grain rice for the best texture.
  • Adjust soy sauce quantity according to your salt preference.
  • The butter is optional but adds a creamy richness to the dish.
  • Sunnyside-up eggs are traditional, but you can cook the eggs to your liking.
  • Adding nori strips provides a subtle ocean flavor and texture contrast.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the dish at its best.
