Cupcake Batter:
1 box white cake mix (plus ingredients listed on box)
1cup tonic water (replace equal part of water in cake mix for glow effect)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Frosting:
1cup unsalted butter, softened
4cups powdered sugar
2–3 tablespoons tonic water
Blue and purple gel food coloring
Decorations:
Edible silver glitter or sprinkles
White chocolate candy melts (optional for moon decorations)
Instructions
Preheat oven and prepare batter: Preheat oven according to cake mix package directions and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners. Prepare cake batter as directed, replacing part of the water with tonic water for a subtle glow under black light. Stir in vanilla extract.
Bake and cool: Divide batter evenly among liners and bake as directed. Cool completely before frosting.
Make frosting: Beat butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with small amounts of tonic water until smooth and fluffy.
Tint and frost: Divide frosting into two bowls and tint one blue and the other purple. Swirl the two colors together in a piping bag and frost cupcakes.
Decorate: Sprinkle with edible silver glitter or sprinkles. For optional moon decorations, melt white chocolate candy melts, spread into circles on parchment, and let set before placing on top.
Serve: Serve cupcakes under a black light to reveal the glow effect.
Notes
The glow effect comes from quinine in tonic water, which glows under UV light. These cupcakes look normal in regular lighting but have a magical glow for parties.
