Units Scale

Main Scone Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter (cubed)
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the orange glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the scone dough: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, whisk together cream, egg, orange juice, and vanilla. Pour wet mixture into dry ingredients and stir just until a soft dough forms.
  3. Shape and bake: Turn the dough onto a floured surface, pat into a circle, cut into wedges, and place on the baking sheet. Bake for 15–18 minutes until golden brown.
  4. Make the orange glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice, and zest. Drizzle over warm or cooled scones before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add dried cranberries or mini chocolate chips to the dough.
  • These scones freeze well—just thaw and reheat before glazing.
