French Toast Bake

This French Toast Bake is a delicious, make-ahead breakfast casserole perfect for holidays or busy mornings. It’s made with crusty bread, eggs, milk, and warm spices, baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • Butter or nonstick spray for greasing

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. Spread the cubed French bread evenly in the dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Gently press the bread down to soak up the mixture.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or for at least 4 hours.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  7. Top with chopped pecans if using.
  8. Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes, or until golden brown and the center is set.
  9. Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Serve with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit if desired.

Notes

  • Use day-old or slightly stale bread for best texture.
  • Can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Freezes well for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight and reheat before serving.
