Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 4 slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
- 4 hamburger buns
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Optional: mayonnaise, mustard, or aioli for serving
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, until caramelized (about 25–30 minutes). Add Worcestershire sauce and stir to combine.
- While onions cook, preheat grill or skillet to medium-high heat.
- In a bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Form into 4 patties.
- Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side, or until desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and cover to melt.
- Toast the buns if desired.
- Assemble burgers by placing a patty on each bun bottom, topping with a generous portion of caramelized onions, and finishing with the top bun. Add condiments if desired.
Notes
- Use Gruyère for a more authentic French onion flavor.
- Caramelized onions can be made ahead and stored in the fridge.
- For extra flavor, spread garlic aioli on the buns.
