  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional)

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk (plus more for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare the baking sheet: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the buttermilk and mix until just combined. Pat the dough, fold, and cut out biscuits.
  3. Bake the biscuits: Place the biscuits on the baking sheet, brush with buttermilk, and bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Keep butter and buttermilk cold for best results.
  • Handle the dough gently to maintain flakiness.
  • Serve warm with butter, jam, or gravy.
