Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Sauce:

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb ground pork or beef
  • 45 Filipino-style red hot dogs, sliced diagonally
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup tomato paste
  • 1 cup banana ketchup
  • 1 cup water or beef broth
  • 12 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Pasta:

  • 1 lb spaghetti noodles

For Topping:

  • 1/21 cup shredded quick-melt cheese (Eden cheese or cheddar)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Spaghetti: Cook spaghetti noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  2. Make the Sauce Base: In a large pan over medium heat, heat the oil. Sauté the onion until soft, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Add the ground pork or beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  3. Add Hot Dogs and Simmer: Stir in the sliced hot dogs and cook for 2–3 minutes. Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, banana ketchup, water or broth, and sugar. Mix well. Season with salt and pepper. Let the sauce simmer uncovered on low for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  4. Combine and Serve: Toss cooked spaghetti with the sauce, or serve the sauce on top of the noodles. Sprinkle generously with shredded cheese and serve warm.

Notes

  • Banana ketchup gives Filipino spaghetti its signature sweet and tangy flavor—don’t skip it!
  • Add chopped bell peppers or carrots to the sauce for extra nutrition and texture.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Sauce freezes well too!
