Description

Easy Shrimp Saganaki is a delicious Greek-inspired dish featuring succulent shrimp cooked in a rich tomato sauce with garlic, onions, and oregano, topped with melted feta cheese. This quick and flavorful skillet recipe is perfect for a weeknight dinner and served best with crusty bread for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp and Sauce

  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Toppings and Serving

  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Crusty bread for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil and sauté onion: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until the onion softens and becomes translucent.
  2. Add garlic and cook briefly: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to let it burn.
  3. Prepare the tomato sauce: Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, red pepper flakes (if using), dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir well and let the sauce simmer for 5 to 7 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  4. Cook the shrimp: Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the tomato sauce. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the shrimp turn pink and opaque throughout.
  5. Add feta and melt: Sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese over the shrimp and cover the skillet. Let it sit for 1 to 2 minutes to allow the cheese to soften gently without fully melting.
  6. Finish with parsley and lemon juice: Remove the skillet from heat, then stir in the chopped fresh parsley and fresh lemon juice. This adds a fresh, bright flavor to the dish.
  7. Serve: Serve the shrimp saganaki immediately with crusty bread on the side for dipping into the rich tomato and cheese sauce.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, add a splash of white wine to the tomato sauce during simmering.
  • Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes according to your preferred spice level.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop to prevent the shrimp from becoming tough.
  • To keep it gluten-free, ensure the crusty bread served is gluten-free or avoid bread altogether.
