Easy Irish Brown Bread

A simple and hearty Irish brown bread, perfect for a quick homemade loaf with a rustic texture and nutty flavor.

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease or line a baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, and brown sugar.
  3. Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon until the dough comes together.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead for a minute or two.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it in the prepared pan.
  6. Make a deep cross on top of the dough with a sharp knife.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

  • Ensure your buttermilk is fresh for the best flavor.
  • For a crustier bread, you can bake it directly on a baking sheet instead of in a pan.
