Units Scale

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 3/4 to 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water and sugar, then stir in the yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add oil and salt, then gradually mix in the flour, starting with 2 ¾ cups and adding more as needed until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  6. Place the loaf in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  7. Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes, or until the dough rises about 1 inch above the rim of the pan.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Remove from the pan and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • You can brush the top of the bread with melted butter after baking for a softer crust.
  • For a slightly sweeter loaf, increase the sugar to 3 tablespoons.
