Easy Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Creamy and flavorful garlic mashed potatoes — a simple, comforting side dish perfect for weeknight dinners or holiday meals.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 pounds Yukon gold or russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 3/4 cup whole milk (or half-and-half for extra creaminess)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (optional, for tanginess)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives or parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Place potato chunks and garlic cloves in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a pinch of salt.
  2. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium and simmer until potatoes are tender (about 15–20 minutes).
  3. Drain potatoes and garlic well and return to the pot. Let sit briefly to evaporate excess moisture.
  4. In a small saucepan or microwave, heat butter and milk until butter is melted and mixture is warm.
  5. Mash potatoes and garlic using a potato masher or fork until mostly smooth.
  6. Pour in warm butter-milk mixture and continue to mash until creamy. Stir in sour cream, if using.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Transfer to a serving bowl, garnish with chopped chives or parsley, and serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra silky potatoes, substitute half of the milk with cream.
  • Use a ricer or food mill for ultra-smooth texture.
  • Make-ahead option: prepare through step 5, store in refrigerator, then reheat gently with extra milk.
  • To keep warm, place in oven-safe dish and cover; keep in a 200 °F (93 °C) oven.
  • Mix in roasted garlic instead of boiled for sweeter garlic flavor.
