Description

Creamy Scalloped Potatoes are a comforting side dish made with layers of thinly sliced potatoes baked in a rich, cheesy cream sauce until golden and bubbly.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk and cream, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens.
  4. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and nutmeg. Stir in the cheddar and Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth. Remove from heat.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared dish. Pour half of the sauce over the potatoes.
  6. Repeat with remaining potatoes and pour the rest of the sauce over the top.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  8. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add sautéed onions or bacon between the layers.
  • Use a mandoline for evenly sliced potatoes.
  • Can be prepared a day ahead and baked before serving.
