Ingredients

Units Scale

For the custard:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Additional:

  • 2 ripe bananas (sliced)
  • Whipped cream for topping (optional)
  • Vanilla wafer cookies or graham cracker crumbs for layering (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks and milk until well combined, then gradually whisk the mixture into the dry ingredients in the saucepan. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble, about 5–7 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth. Let the custard cool slightly.

  3. Layer sliced bananas and optional cookies or crumbs into individual serving cups or jars.
  4. Spoon the warm custard over the bananas, then chill for at least 2 hours until fully set.
  5. Top with whipped cream and more banana slices before serving if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use half-and-half in place of milk.
  • The custard can be made a day in advance and stored covered in the refrigerator.
