Custard:
2cups whole milk
1/2cup granulated sugar
1/4cup cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 large egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Additional:
2 ripe bananas (sliced)
whipped cream for topping
crushed vanilla wafers or graham crackers for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Prepare Custard: In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Whisk egg yolks with a splash of milk until smooth. Gradually whisk in the rest of the milk. Pour the mixture into the saucepan, whisking constantly. Cook over medium heat until thickened, about 6–8 minutes.
Finish Custard: Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract until smooth. Cool slightly.
Assemble: In serving cups, layer sliced bananas and warm custard. Repeat layers if desired. Cover with plastic wrap, press onto the surface, and chill for at least 2 hours.
Serve: Top with whipped cream and crushed cookies before serving.
Notes
Use very ripe bananas for the best flavor.
Fold in banana slices just before chilling for a softer texture.
Substitute half-and-half for half the milk for extra richness.
