Description

A Classic Patty Melt Burger with a flavorful secret sauce, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese sandwiched between toasted rye bread slices. This American diner-style sandwich offers a perfect balance of savory beef patties, sweet onions, and creamy sauce, all grilled to crispy golden perfection on the stovetop.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patty Melt

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Secret Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon sweet pickle relish
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, sweet pickle relish, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir until smooth and set aside to let the flavors meld.
  2. Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes until they are soft, golden brown, and caramelized. Season with a pinch of salt and set aside.
  3. Form and Season Patties: Divide the ground beef into two equal portions. Shape each into oval patties roughly the size of the rye bread slices. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  4. Cook the Patties: Using the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until fully cooked through and nicely browned. Wipe the skillet clean afterwards.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches: Lay out the rye bread slices and spread the secret sauce evenly on each slice. On two slices, layer a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, then another slice of Swiss cheese. Top each with the remaining bread slices to complete the sandwich.
  6. Grill the Patty Melts: Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in the skillet over medium heat. Grill each sandwich for 3 to 4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted thoroughly.
  7. Serve: Serve the patty melts hot for the best flavor and texture experience.

Notes

  • Swiss cheese can be substituted with American or cheddar cheese depending on preference.
  • For extra crunch, use a cast iron pan and press down on the sandwich slightly while grilling, mimicking a panini press.
  • The secret sauce can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
