Ingredients
Scale
For the Patty Melt
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 4 slices rye bread
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Secret Sauce
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon sweet pickle relish
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Instructions
- Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, sweet pickle relish, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir until smooth and set aside to let the flavors meld.
- Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes until they are soft, golden brown, and caramelized. Season with a pinch of salt and set aside.
- Form and Season Patties: Divide the ground beef into two equal portions. Shape each into oval patties roughly the size of the rye bread slices. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Cook the Patties: Using the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until fully cooked through and nicely browned. Wipe the skillet clean afterwards.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Lay out the rye bread slices and spread the secret sauce evenly on each slice. On two slices, layer a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, then another slice of Swiss cheese. Top each with the remaining bread slices to complete the sandwich.
- Grill the Patty Melts: Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in the skillet over medium heat. Grill each sandwich for 3 to 4 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted thoroughly.
- Serve: Serve the patty melts hot for the best flavor and texture experience.
Notes
- Swiss cheese can be substituted with American or cheddar cheese depending on preference.
- For extra crunch, use a cast iron pan and press down on the sandwich slightly while grilling, mimicking a panini press.
- The secret sauce can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
