- 6 cups day-old bread, cubed
- 2 cups milk
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
- For the vanilla sauce:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Place cubed bread in the baking dish. If using raisins, sprinkle them over the bread.
- In a large bowl, whisk together milk, melted butter, sugars, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Pour the mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Let it soak for about 15 minutes.
- Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden and a knife inserted comes out clean.
- Meanwhile, make the vanilla sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together sugar and flour.
- Add heavy cream and butter, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens, about 5–7 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
- Serve the warm bread pudding with the vanilla sauce drizzled over the top.
Notes
- Use stale or day-old bread for best texture.
- You can substitute raisins with chocolate chips or nuts.
- The vanilla sauce can be stored in the fridge and reheated as needed.
