  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup hot water or brewed coffee (for richer flavor)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan or two 8-inch round pans.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Prepare wet ingredients: In another bowl, beat together the sugars, oil, eggs, and vanilla until creamy.
  4. Combine ingredients: Add dry ingredients in three additions, alternating with buttermilk, mixing just until combined. Slowly stir in hot water or coffee.
  5. Bake: Pour batter into prepared pan(s) and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool: Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
