For the Chicken Fried Steak:
4 cube steaks (about 4–6 oz each)
1cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 large eggs
1/2cup buttermilk
1/4cup vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Gravy:
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2cups whole milk
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Prepare the Chicken Fried Steak: In a shallow dish, whisk together flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. In another dish, whisk together eggs and buttermilk. Dredge each cube steak in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, and coat again in the flour mixture, pressing to adhere.
Fry the Steaks: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the steaks in batches for about 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
Make the Gravy: For the gravy, melt butter in the skillet and whisk in the flour. Cook for 1 minute, then gradually whisk in milk. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 3–5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve: Serve the steaks hot with the creamy gravy poured over the top.
Notes
For extra crispy steaks, let the breaded meat rest for 10 minutes before frying.
Serve with mashed potatoes or buttermilk biscuits for a classic Southern meal.
