Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 2 cups shredded cooked chicken
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or Mexican blend)
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Tortillas
- 8 corn tortillas
For Frying
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)
Garnish (optional)
- Fresh cilantro
Instructions
- Prepare the chicken filling: In a medium bowl, combine the shredded cooked chicken, shredded cheese, ground cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated to create the flavorful filling.
- Warm the tortillas: Heat a skillet over medium heat and warm each corn tortilla one by one, about 15-20 seconds per side, until they become pliable and easy to roll without cracking.
- Assemble the flautas: Place about 2-3 tablespoons of the chicken filling along one edge of each warmed tortilla. Roll the tortilla tightly around the filling to form the flauta, securing the seam by gently pressing it together.
- Fry the flautas: Heat oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat until hot (about 350°F or 175°C). Carefully place the rolled flautas seam side down into the hot oil. Fry for 3-4 minutes on each side or until the tortillas are golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and serve: Remove the fried flautas from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve warm, optionally garnished with fresh cilantro and accompanied by your favorite dipping sauces such as salsa, guacamole, or sour cream.
Notes
- Use corn tortillas for authentic flavor and texture, but you can substitute with flour tortillas if preferred.
- Make sure the tortillas are properly warmed to prevent cracking while rolling.
- Shredded cooked chicken can be from leftover rotisserie chicken or homemade boiled chicken breast.
- Monitor the oil temperature carefully to avoid soggy or overly greasy flautas.
- For a healthier option, you can bake the flautas in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, turning halfway through.
