Ingredients

Units Scale

For the Caramel Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 22 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter and Brown Sugar: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the brown sugar and stir constantly for 2–3 minutes until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth and bubbly.
  2. Add Milk and Salt: Slowly add the milk and salt, stirring until fully combined. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then remove from heat and let it cool for about 10 minutes.
  3. Stir in Vanilla and Powdered Sugar: Stir in the vanilla extract. Gradually whisk in the powdered sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, until the frosting reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency.
  4. Adjust Consistency: If the frosting thickens too much, stir in a tablespoon of milk to loosen it. Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or cookies as it sets quickly upon cooling.

Notes

  • This frosting sets into a firm, fudge-like layer once cooled.
  • For a pourable glaze instead, reduce the powdered sugar slightly.
  • Store any unused frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator and warm gently before reusing.
