Units Scale

For the Dumplings:

  • 2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and cored
  • 1 sheet refrigerated pie crust (or homemade)
  • 4 soft caramels (or 4 teaspoons caramel sauce)
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
  • Butter for greasing

For the Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly butter a small baking dish. Roll out the pie crust and cut into 4 equal squares.
  2. Assemble Dumplings: Cut each apple in half and place one half, cut-side down, in the center of each square. Fill each apple with a caramel and nuts if desired. Fold corners up and seal.
  3. Add Egg Wash and Sugar: Brush dumplings with egg wash, then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
  4. Make the Sauce: In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, water, and butter. Simmer, then stir in vanilla extract. Pour around dumplings.
  5. Bake: Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden and tender. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • You can use puff pastry for a flakier texture.
  • Store leftovers covered in the fridge and reheat before serving.
