Apples:

  • 6 pounds of apples (such as Fuji, Gala, or McIntosh), peeled, cored, and sliced

Sugars and Spices:

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Liquid:

  • 1/2 cup apple cider or water

Instructions

  1. Cook the Apples: Place the sliced apples and apple cider (or water) into a large slow cooker. Cook on low for 10 hours until very soft.
  2. Puree and Add Sweeteners: Use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth. Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Continue cooking on low for 1–2 more hours until thickened.
  3. Finish and Can: Stir in vanilla extract. Sterilize jars, fill with apple butter, leaving headspace. Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes. Let cool before storing.

Notes

  • You can adjust sugar based on apple sweetness.
  • Apple butter thickens as it cools, so monitor cooking time.
  • If no slow cooker, simmer on stovetop over low heat.
