For the Cake:
2 1/2cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1cup unsalted butter (softened)
1 3/4cups granulated sugar
4 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1cup whole milk
1/2cup sour cream
For the Frosting:
8ounces cream cheese (softened)
1/2cup unsalted butter (softened)
4cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1–2 tablespoons milk (as needed for consistency)
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease two 9-inch round cake pans. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract. Mix in the sour cream. Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 28–32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
To make the frosting, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add the powdered sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla, mixing on low until combined, then on high until fluffy. Add milk a little at a time if needed for spreading consistency. Once the cakes are fully cooled, spread the frosting over one layer, top with the second cake layer, and frost the top and sides.
Notes
For added flavor, sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar between the cake layers.
The frosted cake can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
