Best Banana Pudding Recipe Ever

A creamy, rich, and indulgent banana pudding layered with vanilla wafers, fresh bananas, and a luscious homemade vanilla custard, topped with whipped cream. A classic Southern dessert perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 1 (3.4-ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 3 cups heavy cream
  • 1 (12-ounce) box vanilla wafers
  • 4 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (optional for whipped cream)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk and cold water until combined.
  2. Add the vanilla pudding mix and whisk for 2 minutes until smooth. Chill for 5 minutes.
  3. In another bowl, whip the heavy cream with vanilla extract (and sugar, if using) until stiff peaks form.
  4. Gently fold half of the whipped cream into the pudding mixture to lighten it, then fold in the remaining whipped cream until fully incorporated.
  5. In a 9×13 inch dish or trifle bowl, layer vanilla wafers, banana slices, and pudding mixture. Repeat layers, finishing with a layer of pudding and a few wafers or banana slices for garnish.
  6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight for best flavor and texture.
  7. Serve chilled and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use ripe but firm bananas to avoid mushiness.
  • You can make this a day ahead for better flavor melding.
  • For a more decadent version, layer with caramel or drizzle with chocolate syrup.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
