Dry Ingredients:
2cups all-purpose flour
1/4cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
Other Ingredients:
1/2cup cold unsalted butter (cut into small cubes)
2/3cup heavy cream (plus more for brushing)
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Add-ins of choice (1/2 to 1 cup total: berries, chocolate chips, dried fruit, nuts, citrus zest, etc.)
Instructions
Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Prepare dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Incorporate butter: Add the cold butter and cut it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Combine wet ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the cream, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
Add mix-ins: Fold in your desired add-ins gently.
Knead and shape: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, knead, pat into a circle, and cut into wedges.
Bake: Place scones on the baking sheet, brush with cream, sprinkle with sugar, and bake for 18–22 minutes until golden brown.
Serve: Cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For savory scones, reduce sugar and use mix-ins like cheese, herbs, or bacon.
The dough can be made ahead and chilled overnight before baking.
